You might want to check out this thread from ML, also good 'cause they talk about 1/72 stuff. Also do a search on 'the beast', you'll get lots of hits.

I just bought this movie last week at Wal -Mart for 6 bucks.

Good flick.

Anyways,

Its supposed to be a T-62. I don't know enough about Russian armour to say if the tank used in the movie was authentic or not. I assumed it was.

As for kits in 1/72.

Italeri has one but its an old Esci kit and shows its age.

I think Ace from the (Ukraine?) has some T-62 kits but have no first hand knowledge of what they are like. I am pretty sure they do limited run stuff.

The tank is supposed to represent a Soviet T-62 but the movie is made in Israel so they used an Israeli modified T-55 sometimes referred to as a Ti-67. Ace models makes the kit, but their models tend to be of limited run quality. Here is a link to their kit: http://www.greatmodels.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=ah72157.

PST also makes the T-55, I think that kit is a little nicer, but you'd have to modify it yourself into the Israeli variant.

Actually, if you follow the thread, you will see that you are correct. The tank is a T-55.

The movie makers used an old Israeli T-55 that the IDF modified and subsequently called a Ti-67 or Tiran 5. You can tell that the main gun is the NATO 105mm and the .50 cal machine gun is a US M2 .50 cal dressed up to look like a Soviet 12.7mm machine gun. Good view of the machine gun is when George guns down the Afghani interpreter at the river.

The tank is supposed to represent a Soviet T-62 operating in Afghanistan during the 1980s. The T-55 looks close enough to the T-62 to most casual movie goers. Remember, The movie was made in the early 90s (1990?) before the Berlin Wall came down.

If you havn't seen the Beast (also known as the Beast of War) I can heartily recommend it to all armour junkies. It's a decent story and a good cast and the tank gets a lot of screen time. There a couple of really nice "on-board" camera sequences. I forced a few friends, with no interest in armour or modelling, to borrow it and watch and they liked it too. Just don't make the mistake of explaining to a non-enthusiast that "it's not a T-62, it's obviously a T-55 chassis; you can tell by the spacing of the wheels ...". They'll just tell you to try to get out more.

I'd guessed it had to be a Tiran, so thanks to Sabot for the info. Anyone make a Tiran 5 in 1/35?
Rich

PS: BTW the movie has an 18 cert (a few pretty violent scenes) which may be a factor if there are younger armour junkies in the house.

Yes, Trumpeter does, Lindberg did (OOP) and Esci did. Italeri reissued the Esci T-55, but did not include the Tiran 5 parts. There are several conversions made for the various T-55 kits. Tamiya is the best T-55 kit available.

Ooops, I've just ordered the Trumpeter kit! The Tamiya kit looks very nice but it's also much more expensive and then would need a conversion kit.

Oh well, I needed a break from German armour anyhow and I've always admired IDF machines like the Super Shermans, M60's and Centurions. I'd only heard a little about the Tiran and wouldn't have recognised the Ti-67 designation if Sabot hadn't mentioned it. So thanks again, I'm off to build another display unit in the garage! :-)
