Hi folks.
Let me run this by you on making steps I was thinking of using foam core board or make a couple of molds in plastic to cast plaster in. which way would you go. On the foam core board I still would have to cover it with Gesso or something.

Am I reading this correctly? If you go foam board are you still going to cover it with Gesso to give the finall casting texture?
I would go ahead and use foam board and coat it to give it to give a texture closer to stone. The board style will give you a mold you can use elsewhere too.

If I were you, I'd make the shape out of foamboard and then cover it with plaster or some kind of putty

Another nice way to do it is to take the foamboard, build the steps, then finish the seal with
a) Spackle - for a concrete look
b) Microspeed Putty - whcih can be etched to look like marble
c) Cover the sucker with woodstrips for something more earthy
d) Cover in a vbaneer using Plastruct or Evergreen sheets of tile or stone.
Then make a nice mold with RTV so you can reproduce this same effect whenever needed in the future!

I use plaster / spackle masters all the time wiht RTV moulding material (I prefer the 50%-50% pink and blue RTV from Bare-Metal Foils, Inc.). Once the RTV cures, put out the master, and start pouring more... resin or plaster will work fine!
