This may seem like a simple question to some of you but I have just started to figure out the Allied marking system over the last couple of months. I'm about to put a star on the roof of my M4A3(76) turret, should I use the one with the solid circle around it, or the segmented circle? (or does it matter??) I already have the rest of the markings done, it will be a tank from the 2nd AD 66 regiment if that makes any difference. This is my first Sherman in about 25 years so any help would be appreciated.

Well don't know what help this'll be, but in the Osprey M4 manual there is some photo reference of what looks to be a restored M4A1(76) from 2AD 66, but from memory don't think it featured any turret top markings, or there wasn't a photo to show... can't remember...(Getting old;)

Either one should be fine. All circled stars started out as "segmented" circles -- it's the way the stencil was made. Some GIs would take a little paint and complete the circles ... some didn't.
