flat base is a paint ADDITIVE and not a paint by itself. You add a small amount (say 2 or 3%) to your thinned paint and mix well. It flattens the color but if you use too much your model will turn grey. Believe me I have had that happen.

I assume here you are talking about the Tamiya Flat Base. You can mix it with their brand paints for sure but I do not know if you can use it with any other brands. It flattens the color giving it a more faded dull look. So in effect yes it does dull colors down, but as I said if you use too much it turns the paint grey!

hope this helps

You can also mix it with Future to get a matt varnish, or satin if you add less flat base

Don't buy this stuff, if you already have bought it, toss it out. It's the worst product in this hobby. Get a real flat coating product such as Testor's Dullcoat or any other clear flat.

as you can see some people dislike it :-)

I have found, apart from one time, that it works ok!

man, i hate this crap too..

no matter how hard i try mixing it with Tamiya's Clear, i just cant get it to be the exact result i want: dull!!!

it gets either too glossy or the whole area turned white...

lucky me, i tried it on scrap first
