Hi,

thanks for the link

but is the filter sprayed on with an AB or is it hand painted ? Or both?

if both, then which one gives the best result?

I think it is meant to be applied with an airbrush. I intend to try one on my DUKW.

I have also read that you can apply it with a brush, so I think either way you can do it.

I use a brush to control the stuff. It runs really, really well. I use a red/yellow mix for topsides and a blue/red mix for undersides. I use enamel paints just as Mig says to do. I still go over that with my normal wash technique. Works for me. Hope it helps.

For best results you should apply it with brush by hand

This is an opinion. I personally think airbrushing works best. It gives an even ... non pooling result.

In short any colour would work as a filter.
But greens, blues and browns give your model a cold hue.. suitable for winter or wet conditions.
Yellow, and reds give a warm hue, and suitable for dry or warm conditions.
For an old rusty vehicle, brown, orange and red filters add to the effect.
Desert vehicles make good advantage of light greys, buff and brown filters to give a gradual dusty effect.

The filter should be thin enough to be transparent, but thick enough to add a hue-colour change.
As faust showed in a recent panzer 1 article. a mix of colours adds a very realistic affect, especially to a monotone colour.

Just my few pennies worth on the subject!

~I have to say i'm with Frank on this personally, i tried brushing and it just left it quite patchy, however thats to do with my painting technique, its quite heavy ...too heavy perhaps ?
heres a hetzer i did a good while back using as Frank said yellows /reds etc applied with airbrush
much more subtle for me

Howdy SonOfAVet,

Here's a couple of good links to articles explaining weathering, rainstreaking, chipping, etc, etc.

The first is from Missing-Lynx and also explains Mr. Jimenez's techniques...

And this second one is from IPMS Stockholm....

EDIT: Since I have finally figured out how to 'embed' url's, the links are now in my post below...
