Hi all!

With pride I'd like to present you my King Tiger for the Ardennes Offensive campaign. It's my first airbrushed model, my first ambush scheme, my first finished campaign model, and some of the weathering techniques were new too. So I absolutely learned a lot from it!

Well enough talking, here are the pics!

Now hopefully I can also complete my dio....next steps are my Sdkfz 251/1 (instead of the opel blitz), the figures and the groundwork!

Thanks for the replies everyone!

The mud technique is pretty simple: just mix white glue (houtlijm rob!) with water and the kind of sand that you use in birdcages (vogelzand of parkietenzand rob!) till you get a nice, thick mix. You can just apply it with a large brush on your model. Let it dry and paint is (with airbrush is the easiest way)

Martin

Ola Martin

Very very nice vehicle you got here man. I like the way your Ambush camo came out. Great job on that. overall the vehicle has a nice used look. I would add a dark grey wash in the big welding lines where the big Panzer plates come together. Maybe a few chips. Adding some metal finish to the edges with a pencil. But with all the weathering you added to it it is already a beautifull model. I like the dark caked ardennes mud on the sides

Great job mate

Hi Robert.

Thanks for your tips. I'll use them in some way. Another wash probably won't hurt, although I've done about 8 already. The chips with the pencil are an idea, I'll do some!

I've also added markings to the turret.

Final pics (I know, the thread title is a bit misleading) will be posted tonight!

Greetings,
Martin

Thanks for the tips
I'd give it a try some where in the furture.
Nice tank indeed but it need chips for a more used look

The tow cables are more confincing (I don't know how to spel this )
Try to make them a bit more rusty.

Martinnnn -

A most excellent build and again many thanks for providing such an outstanding King Tiger example. I've "gone to school" on your build and just wish I could use more of your examples in my "AGE 2" King Tiger (limited because of OOB requirement). I do plan to transfer much of these techniques to doing my "Ardennes" Campaign Panther G. Again great job and looking forward to seeing the diorama progress as you've got yourself a terrific looking centerpiece to work around.

Hmm I'll probably remove the kit's decals again and try some dry decals for a change....

No far from that! King Tiger with the Porsche Turret (used in Normandy) all had zimmerit. The ones with the Henschel turret (all KT's in the AO had Henschels as far as I know) rarely had zimmerit, especially during the AO. Only in the beginning during the fighting on the eastern front they used zimmerit.

Good plan, Dry transfers are brillliant, I'm going to try to use them as much as I can.
You did a good job with the mud, nice texture and colour. If there is one thing to improve in your next built, it's the edges of the mud. I think it could be a little bit less regular. If you look at both front mudguards, on the left one the mud is more irregular. This ( I think) looks better than a more regular ( less jagged) edge. But that does not really matter on this KT as you will add this in a diorama, where the groundwork mud will blend in with the mud on the tank and the edges will be less pronounced and it will look great.
I would not go overboard with paintchipping or the graphite powder (pencil).. Most Tanks in the Bulge were either brandnew or had just been refitted and well maintained. I would keep the graphite restricted to around the hatches and cupola edges.

Very nice King Tiger, looking forward to your next dio addition.

Groeten
