Does anyone know if the spare track links that mount on the side of the Pershing turret were treated with an anti rust agent or painted? I am to the point on my Tammy Pershing were I need to get them paint and mounted. If they were not painted or treated on the actual vehicle the cast steel links would have rusted to bright orange fairly quickly. Surfing the internets I have seen them both ways on models, rusty and a dark gun metal gray.

Any idea which is correct?

Thanks in advance,

Shaun

When new, tracks came with a sticky black tar-like coating. Once a crew changes their track due to wear, battle damage, etc., they would keep the best of the old track and re-mount it as spares.

That's why you will see some pristine track or sometimes slightly worn track hanging from tanks.

Thanks Rob. Maybe I'll mix and match. A couple spares that haven't been used at all and a couple of that have been run a while and stored.

Thanks again,

Shaun

That always looks more authentic. Too many like to weather with a lot of rust, we neve let our stuff get rusty. On a tank, a little goes a long way

Sabot is right,
But,
When we recieved our M-60A2's NEW in 1976,the spare tracks were coated with cosmolean,as he said. From experiance, that did wipe, wash and wear off,so I did have rust on the spares end connectors and on the metal area around the removable rubber pad, after a few months.
