Hi Friends.

Here is a small update of my T-72. I added some pin washes and some dust. But I have to say, I truly disalike my work. Nothing does what I want Also the two idler wheels broke off, the tank is to dark to my opinion and the chips are also

O well, this is what I made. The only thing I like are the tracks

I have no idea how to go on with this kit. Any ideas?

Thanks for watching!

Jurjen,

I have the feeling that you are much like myself when it comes to models. I am never happy with my results, but just can't quite put a finger on it. Despite having others say that it looks great, you just don't like it.

Personally, I think your 72 looks the part well. I think I can picutre what you mean. It looks somewhat "dull" for lack of a better word. But tanks in reality sometimes have a rather bleak, or dull look about them. But your model has pulled of this look well.

The only thing you might try to play around with is some pigments or pastels (whichever you use) and try and replicate some dirt/dust around the vehicle. Play with it a little bit, try something a bit new. You might like what you get.

BTW, the tracks are superb!!

Yeah thats horrible looking, Just aweful :-) Dude, ease up on yourself. It looks great. As Stuke said, trying something new here and there. To me it looks pretty damn good. I can see you have some dust added along the bottom of the upper hull, good move. Maybe some dirt/mud accumulated in front of the idlers and at the rear next to the sprockets. Can't tell in the pics if you already have it there or not. I like it. Gotta love those Frui tracks. "Q"

Hi,
I wish some of my not-so-good stuff could come out like this. I think it's great. But I know what you mean anyway. Sometimes a certain model just isn't right somewhre along the line, no matter what you do to it. Just finished one of Trumpeter's T-34s and it's the same way.

Could be it needs to be added to some type of diorama to sort of 'set the scene' or something similar. But like the others, I think you did a great job on it.

Take care, Sgirty

Jurjen, The only negative thing I can say about the build is that in the last picture with the open skirt, I can see the track humps upward. IIRC on the T-72 there are no upper return rollers. The track should sag downward and not that much. Not like a WW2 era Soviet tank. The paint job looks fine to me. How is this going to be marked or should I ask what nation was this built as?

Thanks for the strokes of luck friends

I haven't touched the model since I posted here but thanks to you I refound the desire for finishing the job. But I had the feeling that I was just messing around with it. Nothing turned out like the way it should be, so the appeasement is not much.

I was thinking about a small vignette/dio with a cottage. I want to place the tank in to a weather-beaten cottage with all kinds of holes and that kind of stuff so that is possible to show the main contours of the tank. But I'm still fantasizing :-)

Good tip, thanks!

Hi Scott,

Sorry mate but the T72 has upper return rollers The T55 and the T64 don't have them.

It is going to be a Syrian so the the markins will be almost nihil.

Thanks guys for supporting me!

Jurjen, I know what you can do with this ugly tank of yours- put it in a large box with foam particles, seal the box, write my address on the box and just ship it to me. I'll see that this blasphomy is kept away from the public (maybe except entering it under my name to the next IPMS Israel contest ).

now really, cheer up, I cant find a single thing about it that I dont like and from the pics I seen of Syrian tanks you pretty much nailed the look of their armor which has hand applied camoflage that differes from tank to tank and from unit to unit.
btw, you can try a filter if you dont like the camoflage or maybe a very thin airbrushed coat of tamiya buff to give it a toned down and faded look though I myself wouldnt change a thing.

oh, one last thing, could you please share the methods you used for painting the tracks?

Thanks for the cheer-up Elad

I tried a new method for the tracks. I used;

-Friuls
-waterbased paint (you know, the most cheapest paint you can get;))
-Plaster

First I sprayed the tracks with tamiya's Flat Brown. Then I took the waterpaint and I mixed that with water. Like 50/50 paint to water and then I added some plaster to the paint. Make sure the paint look like dark brown because when the paint dries the colour wil be much more lighter. Thanks to the plaster added it will look like dried mud on the tracks. So I think it is a cheap method to replace the expensives Pigments.

I always had problems with plaster. do you mean the stuff you build walls with in an office?

I actually found a nice stuff for mud- cocoa powder with white glue. it comes out pretty dark and it smells nice. gonna try it with my M-51 but i'll give your method a shot because it came out darn good.
