Hi All,

I primed my Hellcat, and it came off very well indeed.

However, when I started AB'ing white acrylic over the bottom, it just wouldn't stick. I tried three times, once using a thinner/paint mixture of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1. All to no avail!

So finally I gave up, and sprayed it with a coat of enamel, which stuck beautifully to the primed coat.

Q is : What am i doing wrong here? FYI, here are the details of stuff and setting I am using:
Acrylic : Artists Acrylics(Windsor/Newton Compatible).
Thinner : Distilled Water
Spraying pressure : 20-30 PSI.

I will be using suggns for my next kit, since I have finished my Hellcat in Glossy Sea Blue for now. Thanks in Advance...

Rgds,
BP.

What kind of a primer was it? Did you use an enamel primer or a acrylic primer? Acrylic might have been a little thin if you said 1to1 which might be allright for enamels just use a little thinner just enough so when you insert a rod into your paint cup it drips off instantly without any hangup and the reccomended thinner for the paint has allways been my motto might have been the culprit in this matter. would use the thinner to paint and the alcohol to clean the AB. And are these regular acrylics like gunze sanyo or Tamiya ? (:-)

Ps I never was much on that ratio stuff whatever feels right

Hi Jeff

In reply:

It was an car surfacing primer. Think it should work for both enamels and acrylics, right?

Acrylic might have been a little thin if you said 1to1
As i said, I used 1:1, 1:2 and 1;3(thinner:paint), but no go!

And are these regular acrylics like gunze sanyo or Tamiya?
I think not. I'd asked the same Q in another post, and they'd said that artists acrylics aren't the same as model acrylics.

Does it make any sense now ?

I just use an enamel primer after washing and never had a problem but I mostly use enamel paints. I would try a regular Acrylic made for modeling. have heard of people using regular acrylics but my only luck with them is when I painted my Mom's outdoor statues many years ago which were made out of plaster.
to answer questions
1 Should of how long did you let it set I would wait at least 3 days

2 strange indeed does it say it can be AB. Some acrylics won't stick to an enamel based primer no tooth in water to make it bite. Sort of like the Ford deal where paint came off in sheets.

3 On this these are artists painting mediums like for painting pictures more suitable for painting such.

4 Next time I would shoot a regular acrylic made for modeling Tamiya, Gunyze whatever but stay in the same family. And use the thinner reccomended for thinning clean up can be whatever cleans it and saves thinner at $7.00 a bottle for Tamiya's then the use of windshield washer fluid comes in good. I wonder if that works with that rainex crap the orange crap boy that stuff sucks leaves little white dots on the windshield.
Me I use enamels all the way no problem shoot a gray primer Krylon out of the can and let sit 3 days bang shoot any enamel paint that I want. Never liked acrylics dry to fast in single action brushes.
One other thing after primer don't touch model either as skin oils will mess your paint up.

I think Gunnie is the acrylic man
any more questions holllar (:-)

I'm not sure what type of acrylic you are using because I've never heard of it, but you might look to see if there is a thinner made by the company that makes the paint instead of using distilled water. For example, I use Polly S paints and Polly S also makes airbrush thinner that is to be used with the paint when spraying it through an airbrush and it has always worked fine for me. Tamiya also makes a thinner for use with their acrylic paints.
