According to the book "German Tanks of World War II" from Barnes and Noble Inc by arrangement with Amber Books Ltd. Copyright 1998 Brown Packaging Books Ltd., the Panzer I D variant (of which 12 were produced) were used on the Eastern Front in infantry support. By late '41 these would have no longer been used in front line service, if it ever had been used on the frontline. The book also states that after May 1940 they were never used on frontline service again. They were used for training and garrison duty in occupied areas. The book also contradicts this statement by mentioning that the flame throwing version was still used on the frontline in North Africa after late '41.

This in mind, I would say that you could reasonably place a PzKpfw I on the Eastern Front in rear area duties, maybe in an anti-partisan role. I wouldn't place the diorama any later in the war than the first third of '42.

The Panzer 1 also served extensively in the Spanish Civil War as part of the infamous 'Condor Legion'. As this war was used as a 'test-bed' for Guderian's Armor Philosophy, it soon became very obvious that it was grossly inferior to the Soviet T26. The service here, gives a lot more possibilities to the modeller due to the number of color schemes employed....Jim

Totally agreeing to the others; adding the Balkan campaign (Yugoslavia & Greece).
Ther existed some conversions of the Pz I:

Panzerjäger 1 armed with a shielded 4,7cm Czech AT-gun mounted instead of the turret (used until spring '43)

SIG 33, a 15cm infantry gun completly (incl. wheels etc.) mounted on the Pz I and shielded in a very high open box (very ugly and used until late '42)

Beobachtungspanzer 1 (observation tank)
The turret being replaced by a closed box; armed with one MG and used on all fronts until '42.

Lots of surviving Pz I have been used as training vehicles in tank schools (Panzerschulen) and as ammo carriers on the front.

I think I saw a photo of a Pzkw1 on the Easter Front in Missing links a long time ago. It was the Boeb. type, autumn '41.
They were used extensively in the Bohemia and Moravia campaign and during the Anschluss as well.
