I have never used dry transfers before, but need to get some different turret numbers for a King Tiger. I saw Archer has what I am looking for, but, not being sure how these work, I don't know whether I can put the transfer on over the bumpy surface created by zimmerit.

You can use dry transfers on Zimmerit, and they supposedly work much better on that surface than decals.

Nic, yes, you can rub down things like Turret Numbers and other large things and press them into the details with a small piece of sponge rubber. You can also use the WetMedia paper and decal setting solutions.
Smaller transfers can be rubbed down dry also and then pressed into the details with a small piece of sponge rubber.

I used the 'captured russian Panthers" transfers for use over zimmerit on the Italeri Panther A kit and was very pleased with the results.
I have also used generic turret numbers on the Eduard etched zimm and was less pleased with the results.

Both the eduard and kit supplied zimm from the Italeri Panther A are quite regular in pattern and of uniform depth. I'm not sure how well a transfer would do over a homegrown zimm covering or on the Cavalier sets.. I have not tried either yet.

I've had good success with kit supplied crosses and numbers on "home grown" i.e., very rough epoxy putty zimm. I've used some good sized dry transfers successfully on some riugh, though not zimm, surfaces.

I used dry transfers for the first time on my StuG IV and coincidentely it was on zimmerit and it turned out well. I used the Archer Dry Transfers from their new ZimEdge line for the Panther A (I just used the crosses). I used them as dry transfers instead of turn them into decals and I don't think the results could have been better any other way.
