On T-34 and Kv- series, what are the external gas tanks? Giant jerry cans? Tank 'drop tanks' like aircraft, or the actual fuel containers of the vehicles?

They had a kind of large jerry can.
But it is in connection with the engine/internal fueltank.

I hope this is right.

It is my understanding that the ones on the KV had no connection to the fuel system. They were just like you said, big Jerry Cans.

Almost! :-)

I tought about a T-55.. and that tank had (I think) a connection to the engine or internal fueltank.
That was my example.............
