well the tips are easy, mine are stamped HD for the couse head, F is the fine head and the medium head appears to have no markings!

Needles are a little harder, the fine needle is pretty easy to spot - it has a very sharp, thin point. The course needle has a much steeper taper, the medium needle falls somewhere in between, and can be hard to distinguish from the fine needle unless they are held side by side.

On the end of the needles there are very fine grooves.
They go as follows:
1 groove= F or XF head
2 grooves = M or IL head
3 grooves = L or HD head
Each head should be marked also, I know all mine are.
