Hi,

What should I do if I want to simulate dust on a kubelwagen ?

My kubelwagen is already painted / gloss coat / decals are done.

Now I'm at the washes part / weathering.
I'd like to have dust on wheels, hoods, and side of the kubelwagen.

The Kubelwagen is painted in dark yellow.

Shoud I use pastels for that or should I use my airbrush with thinned paint looking like sand ?
The reason I'm asking is that I have a single action airbrush with no compressor so I cannot control the air pressure. What would be better for me ?

Hoi,

For sand you can use some Mig powders, just put it on the wheels and fix it with some terpetin.

Like you said, you can also use some pastels.

Dust you can make with your airbrush.
Spray very lightly on your model with paint Buff from tamiya.

Yeah it is your choise because the technic and the result will be much different.

Hope this will help you.

Gramdaash,

Following on from Hilberts advice, a single action airbrush is fine for wha you would want to do.
If you use a very dilute mix of Buff paint, you just spray a coat in one straight move along the lower part of your Kubelwagen. Remeber that several very light coats are best, the effect needs to be thin, without really covering the paint job of the Kubelwagen.
You could also use powders, but they are more suited for specific application, for example in the wheels. Mix some powder with spirit or water (depends on the powder), and brush it in to those crevices where dust would collect (wheelrims, hubcaps, bummpers, etc). When this has dried you should then use a reasonably stiff brush to brush away some of the excess powder, leaving a residue which recreats the collected dust of the real thing.

Hope this is of some help,

Cheers
Henk

Buff is a color, for example Tamiya nr. XF-57.
