if you can find some rather thin plastic rod.. painted and cut to scale.. or streatches sprue might do the trick

You can always cut off little pieces of fine copper or metalwire, glue them to the base with white glue or superglue, and paint them (by drybrushing). Or you can paint the wire first, cut it after painting, and then glue it (bit more difficult because the glue will stick to the paint and not to the metal, which can cause the shells to get unstuck)

goodluck and show us some pics of your progress!!

you can also just get thin brass wire and cut to size-no painting needed.

Gummiship, I used stretched sprue for the shells along the turret top for my King Tiger. Just stretch it, cut them, glue them and then paint. If a little paint gets on the ground work, its ok, just go back later and touch up around them with the base color. Here is the result on my KT.

A light wash around them will help bring them out as well, and also help hide any "extra" paint that might get on the ground work. Hope this helps. "Q"

After you put down a few bits of brass, consider using some pieces about half their size painted black to represent the links from the belt. As a SAW gunner I can tell you the links seem to stand out against the ground even more than the brass does.
