CCan styrofoam be covered in durhams water putty i dont wanna risk destroying my dio.

i doubt it would.. water based stuff doesnt affect styrofoam. only thinner to my knowledge

Water based putty are unlikely to damage your styrofoam but what is more likely is to get them to adhere properly. Most times it ain't a problem as long as your putty mix isn't too watery.
If you want to improve adhesion just drape a piece of bandage gauze over your stryofoam and slap on some PVA:water mix and leave overnight. The gauze gives a better adhesion surface for putty.
