Hi All. I've got the Italeri M32B1 on order, and will have a spare M4A2 large-hatch hull after my D-Day Canadian M4A2 is finished - the question is can the hull be used to make an M32B2 or were these all on small-hatch hulls? I can find pics of 'B1s but not of B2s!

It is my understanding that all of the M32s were done on small hatches during WW2.

Damn, just wanted to make my M32 a bit different from all the others! Another OOB build then as I can't afford another convrsion hull! (and I don't need two sherman hulls in the spares box - darned box is bulging now!

A lot of people do the M32 on the M4A1 body and steal an upper from Dragons M4A1 small hatch. Maybe you could try putting the crane rig on the Tamiya M4?? How about an E8 suspension? Just brainstorming here. You mentioned the M4A2 upper. I'm not sure they had those but I'm away from my books right now.

If all WW2 M32s were on 'small hatch' hulls is the Italeri kit inaccurate or is it a post-war version? If it's post war then it's outside my chosen theme and I've either wasted my money or I have to buy another kit just for the hull. The Tamiya M4 early is £19 +postage here in the UK and the Dragon M4A1 early is as rare as rocking horse droppings so both are really out of the question at the moment LOL.

The Italeri kit is inaccurate. That combo never existed as a production model.

OK I stand corrected. I doule checked my Hunnicutts and it was not specific about hatch sizes, just hulls

Thanks Carl. That pic settles it - I'm gonna go for a large hatch M32 on M4A2 hull unless I get definite proof that it didn't exist. Of course we don't know if that one in the pic is an A2 or A3 hull but if one existed then so may the other have done!

There were 14 M32B2s converted in 1943 and 12 in 1944, with a three month gap between. Welded large hatch hulls didn't appear until 1944, so only the last 12 were large hatch.

Dave, if you need info, I have pics of scale and actual M32s which include the interior, exterior and corrections / detailing of the Italeri kit! About 8Mb worth, articles plus 50 odd pics.
One thing is almost certain, for the 12 odd M32B2 based on the M4A2 (Late) a few would have been in USMC usage, as the USMC loved the Diesel engines.
Also IIRC the M4A2(Early) was the first hull converted to M32 and had angled ‘turrets’ (see pic below) as opposed the later rounded ‘turreted’ M32s. So you can use most of the Italeri kit.

An Excellent reference source is the Ampersand Publishing book on Recovery vehicles. It has an article specifically on the B2 version
