Ok , I decided to stop letting zimmerit scare me and I decided on a project to develop some skills in it. I have an old Tamiya Brummbar on the shelf. Not the best kit in the world but it does have some nice large flat panels for zimmerit.
Last night I was practicing on some scrap plastic using Squadron green putty (just because it was on the bench too) and the tamiya zimmerit tool (no idea what set I got it from I think it was engine screens from my Tiger II project).
So here are my questions. I laid down a thin layer of putty on the plastic I was using to practice on. Then I scraped the tool from left to right. The grooves looked fine but I am puzzled on how to achieve the lines. I tried stopping and restarting the movement every few millimeters but that seems to leave a large amount of putty between the ridges. I also tried running a vertical line to make the rows with an exacto knife after scraping the entire panel with the grooves. This looks ok but I didn't think that was accurate because the line is a depression rather than a ridge.
Any pointers? Don't be afraid to tell me I am doing this completely wrong this is a learning process for me and I won't be offended.
I goggled for article on doing zimmerit but I didn't find anything that shed light on these questions.
Thanks
Rob
