Hello all,
Have some questions on some Dragon and DML German armor kits.
First. Does the Dragon Jagdtiger kit # 6050, need to be built with zimmerit to be accurate? Any Jagdtigers see service without it?
Second.
What are the differences between the Dragon Panther F #9008 and DML's Panther II #6027?
I thought the Panther F and Panther II were basically the same vehicle, just different names.
Also, in a review by AMPS, they say that the Panther II (#6027) was reissued (as a corrected version) as kit #6027x. What was "corrected"?
Any and all help will be appreciated very much. Thanks to all for taking a look.
Joe

Hopfully some answers.

The Porsche JT should have Zimmerit. The Henschel version no.

There are many Differences between a Panther F and a Panther II. The F is based on a G Hull, while the Panther II hase a more Tiger II type hull and suspension. The Actung Panzer book on the Panther and varients is the book to get if you really want to "DO" Panthers.

Sorry, can't help with the Jagd info..

But the Panther II was a more paper panzer and earlier design than the F.
Many of the features of the II were incorporated into the G, and the F was to be a firther refinement on that design.

There were actually Panther F hulls on the assembly line at the end of the war as well. It is not believed any F's saw combat however.

I never saw an X issue for the kit so that's news to me..
DML's schmalturm is too large and overhangs the hull sides be a large amount. Aftermarket resin options are better sized.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
John,
#6050 is supposed to be the Henschel version so it's good to go from the box?
MLD,
What is schmalturm?
Could the Panther II be built straight from the box as a "what if"?
On the F, other than the schmalturm, would it make a reasonable F?
I'm not a "could care less" nor a "rivet counter" modeler, so I fall somewhere in between. Reasonable works best for me. Don't mean to cast dispersions on anyones perferences when it comes to modeling so if my previous statement offended anyone, my apologies.
Thanks for taking time to help.

Hello,
I dont know if it available in america, but Tamiya Model Magazine have got an article on finishing a pair of Jagdtiger with some very good results, Im not sure of the Issue but is was published this year so it March or April I think.

Also the Bovington Tank Muesum in the UK has got a porsche Jagdtiger, it has a very thin and poor covering of Zimmerit running upto about half way up the superstructure.

Hope that helps.

goose / Tom,
Thanks for the answers.
I take it that the turret on the F is too big? Anything else of importance?
Tom, what do you want? Hires or Frosty? I'm a tea tottler, so those would be the only beers I'd buy. :-)

Just to be a nit-picker, the last three Porsche Jagjtigers (there were some ten or eleven Porsches built) were completed after the order to discontinue zimmerit (as well as all of the Henschel models) and therefore were not zimmerited. If you want to model a Porsche type, and hate zimmerit, go right ahead.

The Schmalturm needs replacing. There are two aftermarket companies producing them, Cromwell and Accurate Armour....

The Schmalturm from AA, can be seen here: http://www.accurate-armour.com/ShowProduct.cfm?CFID=3597348&CFTOKEN=36405533&manufacturer=0&category=5&subcategory=37&product=129

Biggles2,
This kit would be a Henschel model, so I'm safe.
Jim,
Don't want to put a lot of money in the kit, so I'd just go with kits's turret.

Wsn't there a version of the Panther they were planning to put an 88mm in? I thought it was the "F", but Tom cleared that up for me.

Maybe this belongs in the What If Forum, but.... if the Germans planned to mount the 88 in the schmallturm, why didn't they just redesign the mantlet and front plate of a Panther G turret to take the 88. Apparantly there was enough space for the recoil. It might not have been the desired Panther ll, but at least it would have been an up-gunned Panther. Sounds like it might be a neat little conversion project.
