Hello!
I'm up to begin an M113A3 conversion based in Academy M113A2 1/35 scale kit. But, I have some questions about the interior of the M113A3 version used in combat in Iraq nowadays.
Can I use the M113A2 interior or there are some differences between these two versions? Does anybody have any good interior picture? As I could see in some poor pics, the main internal fuel tank is out in A3 version. Is it correct? Good pics would help...
Well, thanks in advance for the informations and the help.
Bye,
Marcelo Ribeiro - Brazil

Hi Marcelo,
The biggest differences with the A3 is the engine / transmission, spall liners inside the hull, and the steering yoke instead of the old school sticks (pull back to turn or brake). The spall panels are mounted on rails so they can be moved to access cargo stowed behind them. My platoon rolled in A3s for a year in Iraq, I'll try to post some interior pics when I figure out how. BTW there are plenty of A2s being used over there too, in case you didn't know.

The interior sure has changed from when I served on them in the mid 70's. If you dig up the old "Viet 'Nam version kit, that is what i remember. Thanks for the pictures .
DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just figured out what spall panels were, now I know why it looked so different. Those sure would have been welcome as they give you something to lean your head on when "resting".

Hello everybody!
Thanks a lot for your answers and specialy to Garth for the excelent pictures! Thanks a lot.!
Garth, could you please contact me in private by e-mail ([email protected])? I'd like to exgange some informations with you about M113 use in Iraq. I also would like to receive your other pictures, not only the inside pictures but the M113 outside pics too! I'm running after these pics for a long time, as well a person who were there to exchange some informations.
Good to know about the A2 there too. Maybe this would be an alternative for the lack of information about the A3 interior. Does the A2 version also use the external fuel tanks? I like to build mine with these. They realy pull up the 113 stile.
Btw, a full article about the main differences between the interior of A2 and A3 versions would be a good stuff! Maybe I'll do it after this project...
Well, thanks again and I hope make future contatcs about this amazing APC.
Bye and all the best,
Marcelo

I imagine that's about the only thing that has changed on these old dogs. The ride is still lousy (and loud) and our main weapon is still the old "Ma duece". It did keep us alive for 11 months though so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Marcelo ,
Glad the pictures helped out. Yes the A2 does use the external tanks, in fact they are virtually indistinguishable from the outside. I still think you should go for the A3, if you can figure out a way to do the interior with the A2 kit I would consider doing one of my own. Good luck!

Sapper4525, I like that wall paper near the drivers hole. We use the same kind of material for the ammo doors on the M1A1.Out here.

Thanks Mike, you know the deal. We had a lot better ones, but they aren't exactly suitable for younger viewers :-)

These posters are realy great in models. I put two of them (Playboy resized posters) in my Nam M113 wall and the result was great! Sure my A3 will carry one of these too.
