Hey All.
Just a basic question that I think I know the answer to but thought i'd made sure...
I've recently purchased the verlinden productions U.S. Small Arms ammo boxes which contains wooden ammo boxes of various calibers.. such as .45 cal rifle and pistol.. .30 cal, .50 cal.. hand gernades ect..
they all appear to be made out of wood and being U.S. I'm thinking the base color of these should be Olive drab...
any input is welcome.. and if anyone has any picture's it would be helpfull as I want to use some decals for them but i'm not 100% sure of placement...

They can be either bare wood or OD Green. Either is correct.

I would say if the decal stencils are black then go with wood color, if they are yellow then OD. I've seen them both ways

Howdy Delbert. Most new issue US small arms, arty and tank ammo would have been packed in natural wooden boxes treated with a preservative. Paint would keep moisture trapped in the box and is also flammable. Normally the lot number and nomenclature on a wooden box or crate of are covered with a dark paint patch and restenciled. Ammo that was reworked, modified or repackaged would possibly be in a green painted wooden box and restenciled. The green can be almost any flavor you pick. Gloss, satin or flat. Blaster is correct regarding the color of the markings.

Hey Delbert
I would go with natural wood if presented with the options listed, as this would give you a lil bit of contrast to the whole tank being OD etc...

In one of the Band of Brothers episodes, people are unloading garand ammo from a jeep in OD boxes.
