Can anyone tell me the appropriate Testors colors for the traditional German "Ambush" camo scheme?

I've successfully used Floquil's "Mud" for a base color. Look for Dunkelgelb on the Model Master rack for the base yellow color. Without the numbers before me, if you get Rotbrun and dunkelgrun for the disruptive pattern, you shuold be okay. Remember, dilution and application affected the intensity of the browns and greens.

I started with a Dunklegleb base, Dunklegrun and a mix of rust and earth tone for the rest. Al is right however. Don't try to be precise as various thinners were used to cut the paint so the color was not always the same.

Tamiya has the three colors in flat acrylics. I have a lot of Model Master paint and my Afrika Mustard looks a lot like the dunkelgelb of the Tamiya. Is this possible? That the Afrika Mustard Yellow is the same as the "Dunkelgelb"

How does the Tamiya dark yellow compare with others like Floquil?

Mike,
Have to agree with Al on the mud. Used that myself and also Floquil's Depot Buff. I've even used various shades of Floquil greens and red for the camouflage colors.
Monte,
Nice looking Jagdtiger you have there.

Am I to understand correctly that from late '44 onward German tanks left the factory with the dark green element as the base? I've used Model Master's Dark Green (FS 34079) for the King Tiger I'm working on. I have Afrika Mustard (FS 30266) [I think it's way too yellow] and Dark Tan (FS 30219) [haven't sprated it before]. Since I've only put on the base color (Dark Green), what are better alternatives for the other two colors?

Mike
When I did this King tiger

I used Humbrol # 84 for the yellow, 117 for the green and 160 for the red/brown.

I've had a look at my colour chart and it doesn't give Testors equivalents for them but there are sites about with full colour equivalent charts.

The correct Testors colors are as follows
MM2 # 2095 Dunkelgelb
MM2 # 2097 Olivgrun
MM2 # 2100 Signalbraun
As said previously the intensity of the colors changed
with the field application and paint/thinner ratio

One more question...do they sell the above colors in spray?

Mike,

I think Testors only sells the "Afrika Mustard" in the rattle can. I think it is a bit too mustardy if that makes any sense. They do make all three in the Acryl line. They are water base and I shoot them without thinning through my single action AB. If you are looking for an excuse to buy a single action AB, this may be your chance.

Hope this helps,

Shaun

Argh! Well that bites...not in the market for an airbrush at this time. OK, redirect...which paint manufacturer sells decent "ambush" colors that come in spray cans?

Unless you're planning on painting a 1:1 scale tank spray cans might give you a little too much coverage in 1:35th. :-)

You would only need to spray on the yellow base color. The rest could be handpainted and still be quite authentic as more often as not the crew brushed the colors on themselves

That's viable alternative? I was under the impression the crews used a spray gun in the field. And of coure there are ways to spray (rattle can) the camo scheme and to make it look scale...

Woodstock74 -

When I did my Tamiya "Ardennes" King Tiger, I used the Tamiya "rattle cans" (TS-1 Dark Yellow as base). They also have TS-2 Red Brown & TS-3 Dark Green that as others have mentioned could work and be used with washes/shading to get effect you want. I found out later that most of the late 1944 German tanks(like KTs) came from the factory with the "red oxide" primer as the base applied. Does anyone have a good choice for this color? Anyway, to get the "hard edge" of the ambush scheme, I used the Tamiya acrylics of red brown and dark green hand brushed on. Concord's "Battle of the Bulge" (Steve Zaloga) has some great color plates for this as references. I'm saving up for my Iwata HP-C so am sympathetic with being "stuck" with this approach for now. Hope this helps some,

How do you get a smooth finish hand brushing? I would think it would end up streaky?

I went to the hobby store today and bought 2 Tamiya sprays, Dark Yellow and Red Brown. I've already painted my King Tiger Testor's Dark Green spray. Then I just realised, aren't Tamiya sprays lacquers? And you can't spray a lacquer over an enamel, right? Nuts...
