Hi everybody. I have only used spray can paint in the past. I'm just trying to return to the hobby and I got an AB with a small compressor made for AB's. I find that the pressure is very weak compared to that of the spray cans. I have to paint like 6 or 7 layers to get full coverage. I also have to move my hand real slow and close to the model. And it's not easy to paint the somewhat hidden spots. The couple of times I've used it, I guess the paint looked OK in the end. But is it supposed to be this slow to get any coverage or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Hisham, That sounds about right for an air brush, multiple coats of fine layered paint till you are happy. Its a totally different concept than a spray can, it gives you more control over the look of your model Ive been using mine about a year now and I still only have managed to learn how to put a decent base coat on and a nerve wracking attempt at paint fade. Im sure you wll get the hang of it , plenty of practise is the way. Re holding the brush very close, when you do this you cause the AB to give a finer line try opening up the paint flow a little you may have adjust the air flow and move the brush to about three inches away that will give you a wider spray pattern which is good for your base coats. hope this helps mate good luck.

Hisham

John is correct, practice practice practice.

Once you have mastered it, it will be difficult to ever return to the spray can.

In time you'll love using it.

take care

If you would tell us what make, and type of airbrush, and what type of compressor you bought, we probably could give a more detailed answer.
If your compressor is one of those little tiny, diaphram without a tank types, they really do not put out vast amounts of air. As for the airbrush, we would really need to know what kind you are using.

John... Thanks. It makes me feel better to know that it does take a while to get used to it and that it's not just me.

Dave... Yes, it's a small compressor without a tank. I got it from an arts store that sells supplies to arts students and architects. And the AB is a badger 350.

Cheers guys.

There should be a needle adjustment...... you may have it closed off too much.

Actually, Dave, I've used several settings for the needle. I guess maybe I'm comparing too much to the spray cans. Guess I'll just have to muddle along until I get the hang of it. Thanks again guys.

Also don't forget you need to thin the paint.......
Good luck, and keep us posted.
