Or can it do with-out?

Yes, I believe it does need zimmerit. Zimmerit application was halted on German vehicles on 09-09-1944, as stated here:

It would be highly unlikely that you would find one without it. There are so many methods out there for zimmerit, that this should quit being such a daunting task. With the panther, you need to decide whether to go block or diamond pattern. You can get stamps or rollers if you are going the putty/paste method. There are thin brass sheets (Eduard and Verlinden) and thin resin sheets (Cavalier) availalbe. Just pick your poison. I have done the self applique. and the Cavalier resins . From now on it's strickly Cavalier !

Janwillem,
Zimmerit is also made by Atak. they have sets for specific vehicles (and brand), including the DML Panther A late.
Their Jagdpanther set is nice (have used it), their Tiger I and Pz IV sets do look nice (still have to use them. Atak might be easier to get over here.
I hope this helps, and good luck,
Harm

Janwillem,
Yes it's a deffinate. The Panther would have had zimmerite. The only question is what pattern or type. ie. Blocked or Ridged And I agree with Blaster76
FROM NOW ON; It'll be the Zimmerit sheets from cavalier. If you havn't seen these check them out.!!!!
They are DEFFINATELY worth it. Saves tons of time and effort. Todd

I'll have to agree with everyone else Jan, its a big yes for zimmerit in Normandy.
I have the Dragon Panther A Late and need to zim it as well.
I"m with Todd, the Cavalier sets are great, I have just finished putting the Pz IV H set on the Tamiya Pz IV H and it looks great.
Only requires a little preparation and on it goes with no problems.
