What color woud this have been in teh early years of the war? Still Grey or desert yellow?

If it is before 1943 and it hadn't been to the African front it should be standard grey.

It depends on if you mean mainland Italy or Sicily. Vehicles on Sicily would most likely be in Africa yellow with green camouflage over the top. I flew into Sigonilla on my way back to the Persian Gulf in March 1995, and it looked like pictures of the African savannah on National Geographic

Have to agree with Bison. PANZERGRAU is the colour it should be. However there is always room for [some] artistic license as often vehicles were painted with some kind of camouflage by their crews, with sweeping brushes, towels, anything really, whether official or not.
