Okay, I am more intuned with modern armor subjects, so forgive me all you Sherman experts, but I need some advice.

I want to do a diorama with a Sherman still in the surf at Omaha beach. I have the DML figures and I am getting the new Verlinden ones too. I want to have them huddled around the tank or near it. I am sure many of you are familiar with the one or two photos that exist showing such a scene.

I know there are Marine models available with the wading trunks ( I don't want to do a DD tank), but I am not aware of an Army model. But is the Marine version totally incorrect for D Day or can I get one of these kits and be able to do some converting to get it correct for an Army tank? What kit or kits should I get?

Thanks.

The Marine version with wading trunks by Italeri builds into either an M4A2 (sort of) or M4A3. Neither one is proper for a D-Day Omaha Beach Sherman.

Most of the photos show M4 early tanks with wading trunks, the M4A1 or DD tanks.

Hi Bob ..For the D-Day landing of the US forces you can either use the Tamiya M4 or the Dragon M4A1 early kits as for the wading gear the one included with the Marine kits is not really correct for the European theatre but you might be able to convert them..Probably better than starting from scratch..

For some inspiration, check out Dr. Ahn's DDay Sherman:

It's based on a well-known photo.

I forget who makes it there is a resin wading set for the M4 and M4A1. I think it was Tank Workshop or whoever bought them out.

TWS which is now owned by Tiger Model Designs makes a wading trunk set, here is the link to it:

As has been mentioned already the Tamiya M4 is a good kit for your purposes. Nice OOTB with not a lot to do to it for a nice model.

Thank you fellas. I think I have that Tamiya kit in my stash. Now to get that wading kit ...

I checked out that model on ML. Very nice. It does not look like alot of work needs to be done to make it accurate. This is looking more interesting.

Hey Burik:
You may already know this link but I frequently direct people to this articles page. It has a "tweaks" list for the Tamiya M4 that I think you'll find helpful:

I've collected a lot of Sherman references here at AA, perhaps some of them can be usefull for you.
