It was a maybach v12, Hillary Doyle and Thomas Jentz have published several god books on the Tiger. A litle on the expensive side but worth it.

Matt, although there are some after market products coming out for these 1/48th kits, i do not think anyone has made an after market engine for the Tiger.
http://tiger1.info/I recommend that site for all your reference needs on the Tiger 1.

Verlinden have announced a drop in engine bay for the Tamiya 1/48 Tiger.
Track48 also have the fuel tanks/radiators in the works, check under "Whats New". All you need do to the exhausts is to refine the top covers by opening them out to represent the five or six rods that held them above the exhausts proper.

Page through this site for more on the Tiger, I can't remember which page deals with the engine compartment. Care is needed as the Bovington restoration used a later engine than the one originally installed in the tank.
http://www.tiger-tank.com/ This is another life-times worth of Tiger stuff here
http://www.tiger1.info/ Be aware also that the Saumur Tiger is a later version with a different engine to the Tamiya early (ish)
