I want to show a house that was previously occupied by a jewish person. I know that the houses were marked for easy recognition with paint but have not been able to find what the marking was.
I have a picture of someone in a ghetto marking the house but the symbol or writing is not visible.
Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks

Robbo

hi there

i once saw a picture of a jewish shop in brussels around 1940.

it was not marked by paint, but just a simple sign on the show-window saying :' this is a Jewish entreprise"

i will search for a copy if you like ?

kind regards

Well believe it or not but that actually could be everything anti Jewish. I have seen pics of Great stars of David painted on the windows, Or just the word Jew "Jude" Painted on it. Then of course you have the Combination of the Word "jude" with the star of David somewhere in the neighbourhood of it. I have seen pics of skulls painted on windows and doors, Big crosses name it... One thing they all had in Common It was done mostly in white paint.. I don`t say it wasn`t available in other colours but I have only seen pics with white paint.
Also the sign that DMD shows was a very common thing seen in those days. Often on stores, cafe`s, restaurants, dancings and shops outside the Ghetto you would see signs that say Jews are not allowed. On the other hand on Jewish stores, cafe`s, dancings and shops you would often see signs like Jewish store, Cafe, etc. etc.
On Jewish areas you would see besides the Barbed wire or Brickwalls signs saying "Juden Viertel" which means Jewish Quarter or jewish Neighbourhood. warning everybody there were Jews there.
I believe I have some information in some books in my "library" if you would like I could do some rummaging through them and see what I can provide you with.

Never seen any specific markings besides anti-semetic phrases/slang painted on buildings of Jewish occupance or of Jewish business.
I suggest, and this is a dio idea I am suggesting (so no sparks fly off) that you write something that would single out a Jewish occupancy/ business building in a way that the Nazis in the ghettos would have written on the wall, door or shop window.

hope this helps

Hello all,

Most of you will probably know this anyway, but I thought I add a little background to this request so that those young enough to still look forward to 'growing up' (remember that :-) ) will have a little understanding of what this is all about.

In short, the signs on shops, cafe's and businesses etc. where of course not a voluntary proclamation from the Jewish shopkeepers. These signs were enforced to be displayed, and the sole reason was to stop non Jews from shopping at the shops. This was part of the segregation of Jews from society, to make the rounding up at a later stage easier. As much as Jews were not allowed to shop at or use non Jewish facilities (Juden Verboten), so were non Jews not allowed to use Jewish establisments. If you would shop there, it would single you out as a sympathiser, and you would be dealt with accordingly at a later date. It is comparable to the yellow star of David which Jews had to wear on their clothing at all times.
Robert's response regarding the used signs and color is right, this was mostly done fairly crude with a brush and white paint.

Cheers
Henk

Thanks for all the responses guys, these were just what I needed.
I've got a row of houses in a dio and I wanted to give an interet to them and a reason why they had been emptied and boarded up.
I will go for a crude David star I think in white.
Thanks for the title change as the original was bothering me all day.(although I see it has changed at least once more)
Many Thanks
Robbo
