Hi,
I am new to modelling and learning by doing
My main interest is german WWII armor and figures to go along in 1:35 scale.
I have need you guys to help me with painting realistic black leather, like for german infantry straps, ammunition pouches and boots. Do you paint them flat black, dark grey or black/blue ?? I can't deside what looks best and I also need some advise on how to weather black leather to look worn - especially on the boots.
Thank you very much in advance

Hi
Interesting question indeed!
I use to paint German leather in Vallejo Black/Grey (862). Its a quite good match for worn old leather. Remember that German leather-equipment were also issued in dark brown. Valejos leather brown (871) should do that trick. I use these two colours for a foundation, once dry you can add just a little bit of Humbrols Leather (63) round the edges and at the bottonholes for a lighter shade. You could even drybrush that colour along the entire belt or strap.
As for the boots: Vallejos Black/grey again. Drybrush with a light sand (or even off-white) for the worn effect. Remember that worn leather tend to absorbe water, making it darker than the real leather.
Try it out. I find it difficult, but worth the effort.
Good luck, and happy modelling
