I'm nearing the painting stages for an M59 which has an aluminum barrel. I have no idea if this needs to be primed in any special way. Can it be primed like any other part of a model?

Yes, just paint it regularly. I'm hooked on turned metal barrels, they have some awesome detail.

Hello Kencelot. I've just finished the AFV M41A3 Walker Bulldog, which has an aluminium barrel as well. I've painted it without priming, however, the paint very easily chips off.
So my opinion is..Use primer!!
All the best, John.
