While I was doing some research I came across some information I thought I would share with everybody. With german vehicles they always seem to have alot of numbers and letters to identify the equipment by. I'm sure most of us have a basic understanding of the "organic" equipment ie Brummbar Sd.kfz. 166.
But what about the captured equipment, well this is how it works:
The vehicles are divided into one of seven numerical block catergories;
200 for armoured cars
300 for half/semi tracked vehicles
400 for armoured half/semi tracked vehicles
600 for fully tracked artillery tractors
630 for armoured artillery tractors
700 for tanks (including british armoured carriers)
800 for gun carriers and S.P. guns

The next 2 digits are given to a specific vehicle.

Letters were then placed after the number in brackets these numbers identified the previous user (not producer) of the vehicle.

(a) amerikanisch- american
(b) belgisch- belgium
(e) english and canadian
(f) franzosisch- french
(h)hollandisch- dutch
(i) italienisch- italian
(j) jugoslawisch- yugoslavian
(o) asterreeichish- austrian
(p) polnisch- polish
(r) russisch- russian
(t) tschechisch- czechoslovakian

So for example
a captured soviet T-34 becomes a
Panzerkampfwagen T-34 747(r)

I hope this has been enlightening or at least interesting, I just thought it may be worth sharing.
