Hi all,

I'm looking for a describtion of the weather conditions during Operation Citadel, Kursk 1943.

I always thought it was warm and dusty but the computer game Call of Duty : United Offensive show rainy weather conditions.

Now I don't really consider a game to be good reference material but it did make me wonder.....

So, how was the weather during Citadel?? Usefull to know for a Kursk diorama

Thanks,
Martin

From the pics I have seen ( a lot in color) it would appear to be very sunny and nice weather. Cheers Kevin

Hot, dry and clear with a 95% chance of a huge tank battle...
From what I understand it was light enough to effectively fight for about 17 hours a day...

In Richard Overy's work "Russia's War" pages 208-209 Ch.7 "The Citadel: Kurks 1943.". The battlefield conditions and weather were described as such from General Rotmistov's dugout located above a fruit orchard: The din from opening shots of the 12 July engagement, was added to by a violent thunderstorm that had passed over the battlefied during the engagement. According to the account, the rain continued throughout the day and ended that evening. The aftermath was described that the medow and the orchard were blackened by the numerous blasts and fires from the battle.

Hope this helped

So.....I think the weather was overall very nice and the high temperatures also caused a bit of thunder/rain etc?

Sounds like Dutch weather......too damn hot for 3 days and then 9 days rain and thunder.

Ok, thanks for the info mates!

Beside from guessing about the weather conditions, here is a fine webpage, that shows the weather conditions for every singe day of the battle:

an overall view of the light and weather situations is at that very page:
