Ola Matt

About the ducks it depends on a few factors. I know that here in Holland the Farmers often make a big hole in the ice for the Ducks to swim around. From what I believe your dio is in the Ardennes and I really have no clue if that is common practice there. In Holland the streams ditches and ponds are often very close to farmhouses or other residential locations so that Probably makes it easier. Also having a bridges often helps or a little dam that is often seen in those areas. Because of the constant streams around those points it almost doesn`t freeze solid there and a lot of ducks and other waterbirds can be found there. I don`t know about the migration pattern of ducks either but here in Holland I believe they stay the whole year.
About your trees that depends on the tree you have. Pines will stay green all year round. While other normal leaved trees will certainly get brown/red/orange and will loose a lot of leaves in this period. Try to do a search on google for forrests in Autumn and you will see what a quantity of colors is presented in this time of the year and you will see what I mean.

Here is a suggestion, I know it's a bit extreem but it can be done - paint the trees. When I needed a bit of fall color I broke out the color paint and gave each leaf a touch with up to three colors to get variations.
It's not hard, just time consuming.

The town of Castalia Ohio has streams and ponds that never freeze year round, from the underground springs, but all the other creeks or rivers around here freeze over.

I have a creek in my back yard that feeds into the bay that you can park boats in. I had people ask if they could leave boats in over the winter, and I told them no, but they don't listen the first winter, so I wait until next spring until they pull their boat out that looks like it was shredded up with big shears.

Maybe other creeks don't freeze hard, but this one does most of the time. Ever see an aluminum boat that has been setting in 4' of ice that shifts, it won't even look like a boat.
