How high do GIs stick out of the rear of a M113A3 hatch? Does the hull hit them on the web belt or the belly button or the chest?

Thanks,
Burik

Pictures in the Concord book Special Ops Vol 27 show an M113 w/ troops in the rear hatch. They seem to be at about the belly button/waist belt area.

I'd think it would depend on what threats were in the area, if someone was shooting/lobbing artillery/throwing big sticks at them they'd hunker down lower. Even if it was cold I suppose they'd duck down out of the draught a bit.

Depends on if they are standing on the seats or the floor and the height of the GI. Personally, I never went with more than my head and shoulders out while In Iraq. I was pretty much in a crouch the whole time since I am 6'3". I kept just enough out to see well and to shoot when needed. Hope this helps. "Q"

By my own experience riding on it with the Phillipine Army way back in '93 it was up to my chest, just enough for a 5'6" short guy like me to be able to operate the field mounted M60 mg (it was an ACAV M113) on each side. Sitting inside the passenger seats gave me about 12" headroom from the roof, high enough not to give one a head bump as the APC trudges through the bumpy south east asian jungle.

Maybe this one can help a little (just take the height of the mortar base into account, as both soldiers are standing on it ...) :

I have the same experiences...just depends on what you are standing on. Assuming figures are to scale, It should work out the same
