After seeing Davesters post on the huge D-Day dio in Normandy.
Ok here goes , how about Armorama members from all countries involved on D-DAY group build something spectacular for the museum. [ it's 8 a.m. and no I haven't been drinking - yet ]
I know it would be extremely daunting and a logistical nightmare to put it all together. I wouldn't even know where to start.
To donate something like that though to the museum tho woud be great. Hey it would be a trip to France, free wine and cheese, and they might even kiss us on both cheeks [ face ]
Everyone could build stuff from thier respective countrys, some people assigned to do landscaping etc. - peope strong in certain types of work etc.
Then again how to get it there after building - unless we make someone already there - the putter all together guy.
I don't know just a thought, hell even if only a few people wanted to try to tackle it , well you know I'm in it for the wine.
Oh yeah I forgot i'm not in charge, I'm the Ensign Pulver type.
If anyone is really serious and can come up with working solutions feel free to p.m. me. Once again I know it's crazy but, hell so am I.

Are you talking a bunch of different dios or one gigantic dio like the other DDay scene?

The idea of a large interlocking diorama is not at all far fetched, railroad groups do that all the time. Where you'd have difficulties would be in the planning for a cohessive story line that had historical accuracy.

What I saw in that big dio was a collection of stuff (the Marx analogy fit well) with a break down of story line...support vehicles being offloaded while combat was still taking place. IIRC, that didn't happen until the beachheads were secure.

Hi all
Perhaps some thing on the lines of, some thing from each invasion beach, each has a story to tell Mullberrys at sword the distinctive buildings on the beachs then all areas of the beachs would be coverd not just one each had a vital role to play, inter locking great idea Al

Al, thats exactly what I was trying to convey in the origonal post . I didn't mean to knock the D-DAY dio, as someone else has previously posted school kids could have built it. Thats all well and good. As a matter of fact very commendable Artistic license is fine but if it's meant to teach history [ especially at the site of the event ] it could be a little more accurate. Hell if its built by us it had better be accurate or we would never hear the end of it.
Once again thats why I posted it as a far-fetched idea.
Although Al, the interlocking idea has alot of merit.

The original idea was for a museum dio of the beach like in Davesters post on a dio currently at a museum in Normandy.
But if we could get enough space at the museum [ if we could get any space at all ] I don't see why we couldn't do the beach along one wall type of thing. Than an aisle and another section for say 5 to 10 miles inland or whatever would encompass St Lo, Caan [sp], and Pegasus bridge - whatever. Than maybe another aisle and a legnth of German builds depicting inland strongpoints, railyards with armor and troops mobilizing to head to Normandy .
The possibilities are actually endless, hell lets just model 1944 Europe l.o.l.

I like the idea. Try this idea; it's what we do in the aviation industry. We use sub-contractors. Follow me for a sec or two. Have someone in Europe build the base, then others can donate sub-assemblies; tanks, jeeps, trucks, LCM,s, figures, supplies. We all could either donate materials or money to the base builder to help off-set costs. The individual or group that does the base puts it all together. All we have to worry about is sending the sub-assemblies.

This is an interesting idea! How would you ship the built up models over though? Shipping companies are not know for their care in handling.

Wow...still...it's a cool concept.

Steve

One other thought, if the museum in Normandy were to decline, there's always the D-Day Museum in New Orleans.....either way you have two potential sites.

This is what I was going to chime in with. Zoomie's idea about subbing it out is also a great idea. Shipping kits isn't too awefull bad. I bag them in ziplock baggies so if anything does come loose it stays with the kit and isnt floating around in a big ole' box. Then double box the model. Mine usually arrive safe and secure. Back to the D-Day museum idea. Not sure just how much room they would have there for something like this, but if somebody close did a recce of the place and talked with them to present the idea.....it could happen. This would be my vote for something. Just my .02 cents worth. "Q"

Since we've got museums on both sides of the pond, why not do dios for both? It would help out with logistics, shipping costs, etc. They wouldn't necessarily have to be identical, and we would need to find someone close to each location willing to co-ordinate deliveries, set-up, and to take progress pix to keep everyone up to date.

Cheyenne, what a great idea. True..the putting it all together thing would be a major pain in the hiney..but..what do modelors face every day they model. We always have some type of obstacle to overcome, just makes the finished product that much sweeter in my opinion.
I also like Art's idea. Why not cover both sides of the spectrum. Would be as Steve put it...Armoramas

I've been shipping fnished models overseas for about ten years now, with only two minor problems that I'm aware of.
I secure the model's running gear to a separate piece of cardboard with zip ties or wire ties, (stole this idea from kid's toys-a pain to get them off at Christmas when they want to play with the toy RIGHT NOW, but it sure does work) and sometimes use a second box inside, so that the peanuts never touch the model. I find they break stuff as much as anything else.
It IS a cool idea, though. If it actually happens, I'd like to contribute as well.
