Hello everyone.

I keep hearing people talking about Zimmerit. I have an idea what it is but i don't know if i'm right. Is it the type of paint and paint texture used on World War 2 Axis Armor?

Any pics of this what ever it is?

thanks

Commandosolo.

You are partially right Ollie. It was an antimagnetic paste that was applied to armor to prevent magnetic mines from being stuck to the tank. It was applied in different patterns from ridges to waffle patterns. Once applied the tank was painted as usual.

Zimmerit was a concrete paste that was applied to German tanks to stop magnetic mines adhering to the tank. It could be either factory applied or applied by the troops in the field.

Different Panzers had different patterns of Zimmerit on them if you go here

http://pedg.org/panzer/public/website/profiles.htm

there are enoug hpictures to satisfy you i hope? Zimmerit was discontinued in late 44 when it was mistakenly thought the Zimmerit coating would catch fire when the tank was hit by an anti tank shell or high explosive. I think the real reason was that by then the German Army was in full retreat and so it was thought more unlikely that Infantry woudl try attacking mines.

Hope this helps

Zimmerit is interesting from a weapons development standpoint. From what I have read the Germans had a habit of developing and deploying counter measures to offensive weapons they were working on. As I understand it, since the Germans deployed magnetic anti-tank mines in vast quantities (esp on the Eastern Front) they assumed the Soviets would have them too. The Soviets never deployed them in the quantities the Germans did and zimmerit was pretty much another huge waste of resourses.

Does anyone have a good technique for applying zimmerit in 1/72 scale? I've used the Squadron putty/screwdriver method in 1/35, but it would seem that the indentations would be too large in 1/72. Do I just need a really small screwdriver like the one from a glasses repair kit?

Hello:

Here is an excellent article titled: "Modelling Zimmerit in Small Scale".

Thanks, Rodolfo! I didn't think of looking in the most obvious resource. I think I'll try a Milliput/Green Stuff mixture with the CD case side for a pattern. I just have to think of a creative way to make it stick. I find these putties don't always stick to smooth plastics well when used in large quantities.
