I am working on the DML Jadgpanther Early for the tank destroyers campaign. I have added the grid zimmerit and added some spots where the zimmerit was damaged. What color was the hull underneath the zim? Red oxide? This is not battle damage, just sections that "wore" off during to normal wear and tear, like under the lower front hull.
Defering as always to the guys that know way more about this than I do.
Thanks in advance,
Shaun

Think about this, was the zimmerit applied on the factory or on field?
Possibly red primer if its in the factory, as there would be no need to paint it in the factory, and the basecoat of whatever the camo was if the zimmerit application was done in the field? would I be right on this one?
I think your best bet would to have the weathered red primer though.
Dont know what percent of zimmerit was applied in the field, therefore having previous camo under it.
hope this helps you

I asked the same question a while back and it was decided that it would be primer under the zimmerit. Of course, this could be touched up in the field by the crew if time and supplies allowed.

I agree with the red primer, but if you are building one with field applied you could always use the base color and red primer. Show where it was removed and took some but not all of the base color off to reveal the red primer also.

Shaun, this is one of those questions that pops up quite often on the various forums. I did a quick search over on ML and got a lot of hits. Here is a link to just one of the threads I found on the Axis DG that you might find interesting.

Your Jagdpanther would have had the zim applied in the factory for sure. From some of the reading I've done field applied zim really wasn't that common. There are some people (who I consider to be VERY well informed) who think it didn't actually happen at all. If it did it was on some of the AFV's already in the field after the order had first been given in the fall of '43.

I'm in the exact same process at the moment and I've found a good match for red oxide primer is Humbrol 113 "rust", hope that's helpsul. -Jason

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with red oxide and call it a done deal.
