OK folks, I've googled till my fingers ache, I've been thru every book I have, I need help.
"Military Vehicles" by Hogg & Weeks says the bergepanzer III had a heavy duty winch powered off the engine. My question is: Where is the winch mounted and where does the cable exit the vehicle. My best guess is that the winch replaces the gunner's seat and the cable passes thru the machine gun port. I'm tempted to depict that (the cable part).
Any comments?

Hi Chuck,
What little reference I have on the bergepanzer only shows an external winch and the pislen cranes. I can't say that I have ever seen the setup you are describing, on the other hand I can't say that it didn't. I will keep looking and see what I can find, I also have a secret resource at work so I will check tomorrow.
Good luck.
Regards,
Robert
Here is one I started a long time ago, but stopped due to lack of reference. Maybe we could consolidate on our ref. material?

Robert,
Look here
http://ipmslondon.tripod.com/modelingarticles/id18.html for an article on building the "land anchor" used with the Bergepanzer III. I have also seen a diagram showing the anchor deployed and the cable going from the front of the BP to the tank it is retrieving, with a notation that the BP retrieved the tank using it's heavy-duty winch. I'll try to find that and post it. Very confusing stuff, for me anyway. :-)

Chuck,
I have seen that build article before, very nice by the way, but like you I am still confused about the winch. I don't see any type of receptacle for the cable, unless like you say the mg was removed and the cable run through. That does make sense, but it must have been a pain in the a$#.

I agree, it would be a very hot, noisy situation for the driver. I have read that the mg was removed on BP's, but never read why it was removed. I'll keep digging and post anything I find, although, into order to finish this model I may just go with the cable thru the mg port.
