Okay, my next project is going to be the HEMTT fueler. I have the following:
Italeri kit
Eduard detail set (seems to be very large)
MR Model tires (are they accurate? I know there are different sets available for the real thing - I am doing 3rd ID in OIF1)
Pro Art exterior set
Pro Art cab set
I have done some searches on the net and can't find much. Are there any reviews of the basic kit? I think I read another review by Vodnik where he intimates that the HEMTTs by Italeri are not that good. In what way? Will the detail sets make that right?
I think I remember some magazine articles years ago that discussed building HEMTTs, but I don't remember which. Does anybody remember? I probably have them in my stash, but it may take me hours to find it.
So, my plan is to do a HEMTT near Baghdad w/ the 3rd ID. I think they all were sand camo, but I could be wrong. Anybody have photos they can share? I have been doing some searches and can't find any OIF photos (other than Prime Portal, but those are post OIF1 vehicles and stateside vehicles).
Any thoughts on the kit or the real thing would be appreciated. Thanks!
Bob

Yes, I have the pump set too, but I do not plan on using it for this project. I think the dio I will be doing will tell the story of Objective Curley when these guys were surrounded by the Fedayeen. So the back doors would be/will be closed.
No thoughts on the kit? Will the detail sets I have correct the innaccuracies?

Bob,
The M978 (and their M977 kit as well) isn't too bad. Italeri just took some short cuts and deleted some of the details, such as half molded air tanks, no pedals in the driver's area, soft detail on the instrument panel, poorly detailed tires/wheels, etc. The update sets you have should more than cover anything Italeri didn't. I built the kit a while ago for a customer, and it came out looking really good, almost out of the box. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks all. One more question. I understand the real vehicle has blue tinted glass. Is that true? What recommendations do you have for replacement glazing then?

BLUE TINTED GLASS????? Now your going to make me go out in the heat and verify this myself BOB! But if so, Midwest (the balsa wood people) makes different colors of clear sheet stryen. It comes in red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and smoke. Thats what I would use.

Actually the glass is more green than blue, but yes - it is tinted.

Here is a photo showing the blue tinted glass. Maybe it is blue/green, but looks blue here anyway. So, can anyone tell me what the bumper codes say? I can just make out HQ and TF, but what comes after them. Also, what are those numbers/letters between the headlights?
I also have a decent side photo of a fueler from 3rd ID but it is too large to post here (5MB!). There is a stencil that starts to say "JP-?" What goes in the "?" mark? Is it the number 8, 9, I just can't tell?
I can send this photo to someone PM so they can zoom in a little to try and see it better.
Thanks.

Bumper numbers look to be 3I TF 1-64, HQ 410 (or something like that, 41?). Numbers and letters between the lights look like draw grid codes, numbers and letters. There is a stencil on either side of the tank that says, "JP-8, 2500 gal." It is usaually about mid-way up and near the cab.

I'd call it more an aqua/teal color. Kind of like a chlorine blue.

Now that the blue-green issue has been beaten to death, what about ideas on what I can use on the model to portray this? I don't want to paint it from the inside since the driver's door will be open, plus I do not think I could pull it off. I'm trying to think of some sort of packaging that may be that color... I could use the kit ones as templates.

In regards to the tinted glass question, the HEMTT fueler in my unit has clear glass only.
Sorry to add to the confusion but I couldn't resist.
