Just purchased a DML Early Tiger 3 in 1 for $17 during the 50% off at Hobby Lobby. I ALWAYS do modern US, so this would be my first German tank.
I really like the idea of Zimmermit as a challenge (not much use on an Abrams), would this tank have it?
I know its not easy, but I have been modeling for a few years, I would imagine I can handle it. Besides, if it isnt correct, I would not be able to tell! :-) :-)
Thanks,
Ryan

Hey
The Dragon kit is a very very early version...hell even the EARLIEST version.
Zimmerit was introduced just after Kursk, july - august 1943.
Now I don't know if any of the initial Tigers survived till july - august 1943. Iirc only 20 initial Tiger were built.
If some survived, it's possible they received zimmerit. However you need to do a lot of modifications because the Tiger already had a whole different look by then.
I think you shouldn't do zim on that tank, unless you upgrade it to the standards of summer 1943!
You should wait till Dragon releases it's Late version Tiger and buy that one! :-)
Hope this helps.

Maybe you could pull it off somehow... You can leave almost everything the same with the tank, but I would have to recommend you getting a Tiger Models Tiger Turret for a mid-Production version because those for sure had zimmerit on them... It would be easier because with an "Early" there's the Fiefel system and some other crap...(I know that you have to mean the Initial production because the early from Dragon is not out yet). An early turret may work as well just because it has the side escape hatch which seperates it from the initial, as well as some other minor details, like the front fenders that had some other smaller, slimmer side fends on them....Not to mention the difference in the exhaust system and how it actually appeared.... I can double check for you, if you like, with some minor details because I have some great reference materials about the Tiger I at home.

I see, I think......
Did you say it would be OK? I don't want to pay any more for this, outside of the putty itself. No resin turret replacements, I am going for OOB. I do, however, want a semi-accurate tank, but this model will not get the Abrams treatment.
You are correct, it is the initial version, not early. If this version did not have it, not that big of a deal. In an ealier thread, I saw some AWESOME Zimmermit work, kinda got me motivated to try it.
Thanks for the input

No I wouldn't bother with zimmerit on this one ..wait for the late one to show up ..It is highly unlikely that an Initial ever made it long enough to be sent back for a refit that would have included zimmerit. But if you just want to do it for fun ..hey it is your model ..do as you please.

As far as i know the Tiger 1 initial version did not have any Zim applied from the factory, but in the field i guess anything could be upgraded, i would leave it off.

Well, that settles it. No zimm for the new model.
Who am I kidding? I won't finish my LAV command vehicle for another 6 mos. This kit may stay on my shelf for a while.
Thanks again for all the input.

No pictures exist of any Intial Tigers with Zimmerit, and as far as i know, no Initial was updated to include factory or field applications of Zimmerit. If you want to build an accurate Initial Tiger then it is better to follow the instructions than to start adding things that they did not have. Wait until the Late comes our, or buy a Tamiya Late and then you can apply the Zim to your hearts content :-)
