One thing you should look into doing. The jerry cans in that kit are really bad, the hand grips are all wrong. You should consider changing them with either the cans from Italeri or Tamiya's Allied Accessories kit.

I built one OOB (with the exception of adding the strip styrene jerry can rack per the instruction sheet) for the Move it group build. Won an award with it at a local IPMS show.
Fun little kit that needs some cleaning up to bring it into today's standards. Lots of drilling out holes and thinning plastic parts like the front bumper and bumperettes.
I used the kit jerry cans and added a third handle with pieces of stretched sprue. I used thinned putty/liquid cement mixture to add to the underside of the cans to cover over the seam.
Photos of the kit are still in my gallery, click on the photo of the black VW. Unfortunately, my kit is only partially intact. It did not handle the move to Kentucky very well.
I would not bother with using AM on the kit. If you were to go that route, you would be better off buying the new Tamiya Jeep and one of the SAS detail sets for it.

I have that kit in my stash. I'm planning to build it someday and try to bring it to today's standards.
The machine guns (except for the vickers mg's, which seem about acceptable) need replacing. The perforated sand-crossing plates are also too thick and could be easily replaced with scratch-built ones. The figures could also be replaced (or at least have their heads changed).

I have this as a project also. Both verlinden and Legends productions have a two figure SAS set. Eduard have a PE set for it.

It's on my shelf also I was fortunate and got the Verlinden figure set quite cheap the same day to go with it. I intend to make a small dio with it and the 2 figures.
As to the color I am assuming some shade of the Tamiya Desert Yellow color should be appropriate. At least that was what I planned to use.

Legends and Eduard make after-market kits...I have the Legend one and it's VERY good. Verlinden and Legends make figures...the Legends ones are much better, the Verlinden ones seem a little large for the scale. As for colour, I used Model Masters Desert Sand (#1933)darkened with a touch of burnt sienna.

I'm building that same kit right now. I'm planning on using MM Sand as the color. Maybe darken it up a bit. I'll wait to see how the first coat comes out. I may replace the jerry cans with some German and Allied accessory kits that I already have.

Hi Marc........
Here's one I did for the Move It Campaign.
Tamyia Jeep, using the guns, and a few parts from their old SAS kit, Italeri jeep cans, scratch built sand channels, Warrior figures. It was a rather simple, and straight forward project, and I enjoyed it so much, I recently picked up another set of the two kits, to do another.

As the original colour was 'Light Stone' try using Tamiya Buff witha raw umber wash to bring out the detail, and then a further drybrush with buff+a touch of white. Won't be too far from the original.
The kit does need some work as it was originally a 1970s release, but even OOB looks good.
