Ok......I now declare my Tiger I early finished....after all those years!

For those who missed the previous thread. This is my Tiger, after an extreme makeover......

I bought the kit before I ever heard of weathering....or an airbrush! Still I wanted a camouflage scheme...well I don't think I have to say anything about it. Sometimes an image tells more than 1000 words eh? :-)

Now first I didn't really wanted to try German camouflage schemes with my AB because I was affraid I would ruin the model. Till I saw my Tiger again, hidden somewhere in a box. Together with some other models I stripped the Tiger from it's paint, followed by some rebuilding and a primer coat.

An excellent test and practice model not? Still I don't like to ruin a model so I tested my free-hand camouflage skills for the first time and I practiced a bit with my weathering techniques, to get myself a bit prepared for upcoming German armour projects! (like my 251/22)

These are the results....painted in Tamiya acrylics, weathered with oils, Model Masters enamels and Tamiya acrylics + some pastels. Decals are from the spare box and the turret number were hand painted (like it was in real......not too clean etc)

Hope you like it!

Tiger I (early) - s.Pz.Abt. 502 - Russia, late summer 1943

Oh, the other models I'm "reworking" are my T-34/76 and Cromwell. The T-34 was half painted, the Cromwell was already "finished" but will be repainted. The first model in this serie I done was the M4A1 76(w) Jessica which was half built. All old kits I'm gonna finish or re-finish after all

Next: Cromwell

Cheers,
Martin

Great Job Martin, I like the "dust " look better then the "mud" look , it gives some subtlety to the the nicks and scrapes on the paint, giving it a very believable look. I did like your original attempt at camo (although if your like me I hate brush strokes) it did have possibilties.
Your overall look is very realistic looking .

Excellent of applying acquired skills... the difference between the two, like Mark Twain said in another context, is 'like the difference between light and lightning'. Well done, and thanks for sharing.

Can hardly believe this is the same tank! Second version really looks good, but I have to say that it would have been interesting to see how the original would have looked well weathered. Did you go over the old paint, or remove it? If the latter, how? This project reminds me that I have boxes full of my earlier efforts in the loft - they're not fit to be seen, but I can't quite bring myself to chuck them out; maybe if we move! Many years ago I made my first Tamiya Tiger (yep the grotty old motorised one when it was new!), the instructions suggested using cotton wool held on by wallpaper paste as a mask to do the camouflage. Guess what happened? LOL

The original tank could have been pretty cool but I shouldn't have applied the camouflage because it's hard edge and that isn't correct

I removed the paint....it was handpainted in humbrol and now sprayed with tamiya acrylics....so that reason 1 why I had to remove the paint Also it just paints better on a flat base. Handpainting leaves some "levels" in your paint. (it's thick, sprayed paint isn't)

Glad you all like it

Hi Martin great re-painting/brushing only one thing to say the hammer on front top deck looks a bit curved or is it just the picture look ? This is what i did with my old models to several years ago and they were sold after setting in store for about 150,00 euro's each so they support me after buying my airbrush and compressor.

Great job on the Tiger-version 2.0- Maybe the other TLC(tv station) could do an "extreme makeover" on it. What do you think?

very nice paintjob and weathering. i like the before and after pictures..though both camo scheme are intersting. the final cut is the best. one question..did you took apart the model as to what extent and painted it? or just as it was? when i'm doing a 'rework' the least i can do is take out the MGs and tracks..and sometimes wheels. thanks for sharing.

No you're right about that. A mistake I made when I built it, can't do much about that now.

Hey,

Not sure if I understand your question correctly but if you mean if I removed parts like the wheels etc to make things easier: no....wasn't possible, everything was glued already. I did remove the tracks because I had to replace them

Thanks for the replies!

This time I only had to paint the model...guess that made the difference

Also a problem is I really can't work on my homework for more than about 2 - 3 hours a day so I most of the time I get to work a bit on my models as well (sometimes that is not very good for school lol)

My curiosity is roused but for some reason the pictures don't appear!
Mind you, I'm at work, so maybe it's something to do with all the filters and blocks they have on the net here...

Aha! Thanks Martin- that is nice brushwork!
The ridiculous thing is that having viewed your website the photos now show up in this thread... hmm, there are so many restrictions placed upon web access from here- they have a block on sites that include 'web-hosting' in the address, and these have to be okayed before they can be viewed. Bloody hell, man!
Anyway, I also think that it would be interesting to have seen how the original paintwork looked with weathering, but the final result is splendid!
