Is it some sort of spray/paint on coat that gives your paintjob a metal finish to it? I see it mentioned a lot in the Verlinden publications.

Tapper - Metalizer products such as SnJ, Alclad, and MM metalizers are typically used for NMF (Natural Metal Finish) or to provide a "real" metal look to various parts of your model. Some have used it under the color coat when chipping paint. They come in a variety of "colors" from Aluminium to Burnt Exhast, Copper, Steel and so on.
Yes they are all "intended" for airbrush application, but for small areas or "spotting" you can apply with a brush.

I have used Humbrol's polished steel on numerous occasions and I love that stuff. I have airbrushed large areas and brush painted small parts. When the paint is dry, it looks awfull, but no need to wory, you can polish it with a piece of cloth or an old toothbrush and it will look very much like real metal.

I ahve also used a standard aluminum enemal paint, with a coat of satin clear on top for a pretty good NMF finish
