I have to admit I have never ever built a diorama, but I do know a little about trenches in general. And the first thing is that your question is afwully broad....
What do you want to depict, where is this trench to be located?
For instance take WW II:
In dome places the groundwater level is/was so high that you would hit water aftre only a foot or two of digging.... So you more or less are forced to create a breastwork.
In other places you could dig the trench "into" the ground, but need supports to avoid the trench from collapsing (usually wood).
Then you have trenches dug into bedrock, or a comcination of digging and breastwork as the rock was to hard to quickly dig a trench. (sandstone vs granite (sp?).
I think it is safe to assume that were possible trenches would be dug deep enough to provide voer to at least shoulder-height. Or deeper, with a "step" to enable firing over the top.
Hope this helps a little,
Harm

I think you need to be more specific. Prepared trenches could vary greatly in construction from concrete or wooden sides while improptu trenches can be just little slits in the ground.

Well if you want a generic trench walls, you can just use matchsticks stacked together. Just cut the head of each stick

Welcome Aboard Hauser!!
Like the others have said, if you could be a bit more specific (time period, theater, hasty or prepared position, etc.) I will help out however I can.
Again,
Welcome.

Hi there Hauser! I did a small winter trench diorama w/ FJ troops myself. The trench is about chest height and supported by timber planks (ice-cream sticks & match sticks). The point about the groundwater was also depicted in my dio. The ground inside the trench was made to look mucky and unpleasant. Have a look at my dio in the gallery. Probably u can come up with a much better trench dio.
