I have been doing some research on halftracks and stumbled across the M16. I found out that Tamiya made a 1/35 version back in the day. Is that the only 1/35 available, or has anyone heard rumors of a newer edition coming out from Tamiya or another company?

Tamiya will not be coming out with any new 1/35 models. They have moved to 1/72 or 1/48.

Harrison my boy you really should check your facts before you answer a question like that. Tamiya is in fact coming out with more 1/35 kits. They have not stopped development of new kits in that scale in fact they have a new leclerc MBT announced. 1/48 scale is only and addition.. and as far as 1/72 goes..I havent seen anything in that scale.

As to the original post, there is no other US Halftracks at the moment but we hold out hope that DML will release some in the near future. That said the Tamiya kits can be built into respectable kits with a little work and some aftermarket parts. Good luck.
Cheers,
Bryan

The Tamiya M16 gets reissued often and is one of the easiest to find on eBay and such. Monogram did an M15 AAA halftrack that is long OOP too.

The Tamyia M16 is a fun kit to build. It is an old kit, and unfortunatly shows its age. There are some good and not so good aftermarket stuff for it, I would skip the Tankworkshop Track and Sprockets. R&J hobbies sells a much better resin track that comes with a set of K59 sprockets. Eduard has a PE set - its ok, but is sure on the lite side. The M45 Turret, is somewhat inaccurate, the one from the AFV club Nancy Gun truck is better, just watch the post war mods on it.

If your interested I can point out what changes the kit needs to bring it up to snuff.

Sticky,

I would be interested in what needs to be done to the Tamiya kit. Could you post here or would you like to email me? Let me know.

John,

I would also like to know what needs to be done to the kit. I have one in the stash that I'm gonna start soon and have been starting to gather AM parts for it.

TIA
Matt

Let me put to together an abreveated tweak list. The list is basically what I did to mine, based on my research during and prior to construction. Not all of what I did is "Necessary" to make a nice model.

It's not really an accuracy issue as a lack of detail issue really.

Yes, and Tamiya did it. I've all three, the M3 half-track, M16 AA SP, and M21 mortar carrier. In fact you can use the M21 sides and back to make the M3 more accurate, and vice versa.

K59 makes a front wheel set with resin tracks and sprocket. It is available from R&J Enterprises at http://www.rjproducts.com/ for $14. I did not like the looks of the Tank Workshop M3 tracks when I saw them in a shop in 2002. This set looks superior.

I've got the Tamiya M16 about 4/5ths done on my bench. I went OOB with it, and it's a nice little kit. It went together pretty easily, my one complaint would be the rubberband tracks, but that's an old complaint a lot of us have.

One of these days I'll get it finished (I hope). I've also got a personnel carrier version of it that I'm waffling on getting one of AEF Designs sets to make it an Israeli tank destroyer to go with my M-51 Super Sherman.

I find both the Allied and Axis half-tracks to be most interesting subjects.
