Hey

Got a question about the Jagdpanthers used in Normandy.

I know there are 3 (or maybe 4) version.....Early, Mid, Late, (final?)

My question is.....which one was used in Normandy? Only early? Or also mid?

The reason I'm asking is because I want to built Tamiya's Jagdpanther....in a Normandy version. Or should I go for Dragon's early kit?

Id go with early to mid for normandy.also most jagdpanthers around that time had a coat of zimmerit and had a base colour of dark yellow some with green camo pattern.i have seen lots of pictures were they are covered with Foliage and stuff.

Hey

I've read you can built the Tamiya kit either as Mid and Late version.....so if a mid version is possible....

Thanks,

What kit have you got?if its kit # 35203 you will have to use sprue numbers D10 and D11 for the rear mufflers if your planning on the mid type.
Just done some research and it could be possable there were a few late production jagdpanthers in normandy,as the new versions started showing up in late may 44,so thats another option.
cheers karl

Hi Martin,

Going by the schwere Panzerjaeger book, the pics in Normandy show the following:

Befehlspanther A (I know, not a JP).

Early (4th of May in their camps)
Single driver's visor, early mantlet (smooth), two step barrel and smooth barrel. This is the version that shows up in most (if not all) combat pictures.

Note as well that the 654th relocated the tools asap, all vehicles were zimmeritted, and at least for theb654th rarely wore the schuerzen.

Hope this helps,

Harm

Martin,

I am working on the DML Early for the tank destroyer campaign. Great kit. The "anniversary" edition comes with an aluminum barrel and PE screens for the engine deck.

Highly reccomended.

Hi Martin ...I'm doing this from memory but I think there were not very many JP in France only the 654th had a few and they were the early type so you'll have to go with the Dragon kit...I don't think there were any JP's in Normandy but later after the Allied breakout...
Here's a picture of what they looked like ...

Rick is pretty much right...

The first mention of combat found in the 654th Abteilung book dates from 30th of July. Before that day the battalion had been harrassed by aircraft when on transport, mainly damaging other vehicles (3-ton, 18-ton prime-movers (so Sd.Kfz 11 and 9), motorcycles, Maultiere and trucks.

Just a few dates: untill 27th of June assembling at Rockigny then untill July 6th at Mainbressy to await entrainment to the front. There they stay in the orchards near the station.

Departed from the vicinity of Paris to the front on July 13th. They moved to the front at night (between 21.30 and 05:00 (roughly))

On July 20 they report the first harassing artillery fire, battalion HQ is located at le Mesnil-Hervieu. They were supposed to support 276th infantry division).

On July 23rd officers are reconnoitering the approach from the assembly area to the front.
first combat: On July 30th 2 Jagdpanther are ordered to move to the front to support the infantry against an English attack, rest is put on standby.

At 07:15 these two Jag[anther knocked out 3 churchills, the first tanks killed in the West.

THe battalion was broken up in Kampfgruppen of 2-6 Jagdpanther. On August 21 they had crossed the Seine.

The picture Rick has shown was taken in September in Beauvais. The arrangement of he tools, as as seen on the picture, was standard for this unit. And most likely the JP's in combat in Normandy had this arrangement, as the unit, since starting combat, had not had the time to rearrange the tools (planned was two to three days per vehicle), as they had been repairing JP's constantly (up to 50% was in long or short term repairs).

Hope this helps a bit....

If you haven't purchsed yet, I would lean towards the early version DML kit. An excellent kit. I think the only thing I added was the screens and barrel and I've heard those are now included. It's a pretty straight forward zimmerit job too. Lots of nice flat surfaces to work with or you can get the Cavalier (highly recommended) or Eduard aftermarket .
