Hi there,
I just finsih one of my 1/72 BTR-60 AFV, and tried to aplied the wash technique I read on this site. So I first applied a coat of Tamiya X-22 clear to give it sheen.
Then I remembered I read it some here sometime ago, some guy complaint about the flat base he used gone bad. So I thought I might want to try mine first before do anything else.
Upon open the cap of my X-21, the color of the contain looks grey and very sticky. So i thinned it a bit with thinner. Then applied it to a small area. When it dried, to my horror the paint turned out to be WHITE
Just is this normal or mine X-21 is a bad one?
How do I find out if a flat base paint is good or bad?
Also, is applying a clear coat then wash then falt base is the only procedure to do wash?
thanks.

Flat BASE..... is NOT a Flat COAT!
It is made to mix with the Tamyia colors or their clear gloss to make them flat. Used alone it will turn white!!!!!
Buy a bottle of Flatcoat or Dullcoat.

lkoky - this has come up a few times here. Others have more knowledge of using the Flat Base but it has been said a number of times "it's no flat paint, it's to be added to paint to make it flat." Some one will be here soon to give you all the data, I'm sure.

Taking into account availability, go for Hannants own range, their Xtracrylix Flat varnish. It's comparable to any on the market and water soluble.

Thanks Vinnie, I knew with the Model Master products being hard to get in the UK, recommending their Dullcote, Flatcote, or Lusterless lacquer wasn't going to be of any help

Yep.... figured someone closer to home would be able to give him a better answer of available porducts easier to get than overseas mail order.

Hi Ikoki
Humbrol do an acrylic matt varnish - 5220 and a spirit-based "Matt Coat" - both good.
As Vinnie's said, Hannants Xtracrylix is a fine water-soluble flat-coat. The Xtracrylix range is still relatively new... here are a couple of our review links for the range:

Hope this helps
