You could "build in" a walkman w/ speakers into the base of the dio. (just use a tape recorded portion of a move. (I've seen this done in a Tractor trailer garage dio)

I dont really have many ideas on the soud effects but I do have another idea. I say a diorama up at the hobby shop with a M2A2 WWII Halftrack (I think thats the name) with some US Troopes attacking. Well what the guy did was drilled out the barrels of all the guns, and put some Fiberoptics inside the gun. BTW this is in 1/35 scale!! The base was about 2 1/2 inches thick so he probabally had a battery under neath it. With a switch to turn make the lights work. Iam not sure how exactly he did this, he might of drilled through the whole figure to get the Fiberoptice to work iam not sure. I may be able to stop of there on Tuesday and ask them for the guys email address. Just wanted to let you know about the idea and I'll try and get you more information on it.

PFC,
I have your answer, well I got it from my boss. A MP3 PLAYER!!!!! My boss is putting together a Darth Vader costume and he has the breathing on a MP3 player. It is worn on the persons on a belt in the back. It can be played in a continuous loop. I bet you can get all kinds of sound of the net.
Here are some other ideas, small flouresent lighting, LED's of course, glow in the dark paint along with the flouresent lights, fiber optics, and gain of wheat bulbs.
As an engineeer, I come up with all these schamatics to do lighting and special effects projects, bit never do it. The most I aver came up with is the "WAR of 2212" dio in the gallery. All the lights work.
If you need any help on shematics or ideas, let me know. As a matter or fact I think I'll write something up for Jim to post on building wiring diagrams.

A suggestion if you plan to bring this to a competition. Have it set up to run for a period of time then shut off after a switch has been activated or only while the switch is depressed. I was at acontest once where a large dio had some noise producing special effect. Those of us who were there for the day were quite ready to take a five pound sledge to the thing by the time judging was over.

From what I can remember from Good Morning Veitnam they had speakers up all over the camp blaring out 60s music. This with some "relaxed" soldiers and your huey sound in the background would really set the mood and atmosphere. The small speakers could be hiden inside field tents ar small buildings!

PFC,
I will ask my boss where he got his MP3 player. You probably can find them at any computer or electronics store like Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp USA, or any place like that.
Glad we could help.
