1/35 Verlinden V-100 commando car

Has anyone ever built this kit. I was just wondering why it is so exspencive. Looks like it would be a nice kit to build but for that price looks as if it should be a finished model.

Its a verlinden kit. Therefore it is all resin, with PE.

I had built it once, no pictures only problem was whenI tried to drill out the muzzle brake. It was my fault working too fast, I replaced it with a metal barrel, may not have been correct.

Verlinden V-100 is a resin "brick". No interior whatsoever and hull is cast solid, so the weigth is quite significant. To this block of resin you add resin and metal bits. It looks nice once assembled, but in my opinion it is too expensive for what you get.

I love the at look of the V-100. If someone can find plans / blueprints I can convert them to 1/35 cutting templates.

Shame about the price. As long as I've been modelling armor, I've always wanted to build one. But for $50 for a kit slightly larger than my hand? I'd rather invest a little more and go for a Leopold.
There are 1/72 and 1/76 equivalents. Why hasn't any manufacturer thought about making a plastic version?

You have very small hands Or you mean a box?... Cause the model itself is quite small.
And 50 USD is quite good price - the regular retail price was something closer to $80...

i built the Commando twice. Scratchbuilt from sheet plastic using Tech Manual drawings in 1977 while at Ft Hood. The biggest problem was going to be the wheels, but I solved that by robbing four wheels from an old Renwal Atomic Cannon kit. My guess was that it would have scaled out at about 1/30th scale when complete. That was before giving away everything but the airbrush/compressor when I PCS'd to Alaska in 1978.
I built the Verlinden resin kit (?) in 1988. As has been mentioned, the single-piece resin body adds a lot of heft to the model. It might be worth the trouble to grind out a substantial amount from the bottem prior to assembly.
The instructions do not give a lot of help, which considering the limited assembly required, is not that much of a hassle. I do strongly recommend reference material, such as the TM operator manual/organizational maintenance manual, as well as the US Armored Cars in Action book by Squadron-Signal. The last reference you might consider would be the Osprey book regarding the V-100 Commando series of armored cars.
Consider either an old Momogram M35 21/2 ton truck or a scrap AFV M35 kit for more accurate running gear: not much can be seen, but with the right parts, cranking the front wheels to either side adds a lot of character.
Hobby Fan offers a V-100 with interior, but this model is a turret-less model. If a suitable Cadillac-Gage turret can be found or made, it might not be that difficult to make the basic convoy escort/MP version.
If you get the chance to read the Osprey book, check out the Battalion Commander's method of product reliability when he sits in a loaner from the ARVN while being fired on my an M-60. That was a man with confidence in his equipment!
I still have the Verlinden model, and plan on including it in a retrospective of MP combat support vehicles through the decades.
If I can send copies of anything for the reference material, let me know!

Firestorm (among others)has released a resin Cadillac-Gage T-50 turret for an Australian version of the M 113. AFAIK, it's the same turret...
Just my 2 cents

:-) I was just estimating. I think it won't be more than 200mm in length. Though come to think of it, it should be no more than 130mm long. Then it would be smaller than my hand.
Trophy Models has the 1/35 V-150, Command carrier (resin and photo-etched) #TM20006 priced at US$56.67 in a hobby site here in the ME.

In fact the Hobby Fan kit is not V-100, but V-150. It is significantly different in a few areas from V-100 (e.g. driver's periscopes, side vision ports etc.).

Trophy Models kits are out of production for many years now and are very hard to find, so this is actually good value for this rarity. Their models however were similar to Verliden effort - solid resin brick. V-150 from Hobby Fan is much much better (and more expensive...).
