A quick reference chart/spreadsheet with all the link counts for variants would be handy. Where do people tend to get this information from (other than if the kit instructions happen to say)? I know almost none of my books talk about the number of links.
I end up with this same question ever time I build a kit with individual link tracks and I am sure many people here do also.
Hi, I think where the link count on the models are concerned, this would depend a lot on just exactly how, or where, the builder mounted their idler wheel, either a little forward, in the middle straight upand down, or moved back a bit. On my Dragon Stug G, I used the Fruil extended tracks and had 94 per side and this allowed for a good 'sag' effect on top.
Take care, Sgirty

According to Werner Oswald in his book "Kraftfahrzeuge der Reichswehr, Wehrmacht und Bundeswehr" (pages 384-386) the whole Panzer III Series had 99 links on eacht side... Sorry for the confusion.

This question always makes me laugh. On a model, put as many links as you need to make it look right. You might end up with 95 on one side and 96 on the other. Who cares, as long as it looks right? No one will know but you.

Bob's right, the correct number is the number that fits your model.
Real tracks wear and stretch with use, and when the idler has been adjusted as far as it can go, the track is broken and a link removed so the correct tension can be maintained. This can happen several times before the track is replaced.
And I suspect that the ideosyncrasies of AM tracks will have an effect too. So trial and error is the best way forward.
